Administrative Boundaries

Administrative boundaries are well defined, but invisible lines or polygons following a theoretical structure e.g. states or counties, postal zip code areas, constituencies or language borders.

They are defined to close something off or from something. They are also used to establish a relationship between a well defined area and statistical values.

Often administrative boundaries are hierarchically structured. Some of these systems exist parallel and may be disjunctive.

In most countries of the EU the authorities collect statistical values per area unit, only in UK these values are collect per site.

Most of the above mentioned administrative boundaries are based on informations published by the official national authorities or from post office guidance listings, telephone information CDs
